How Important is Carat Size?

Saturday, December 18th, 2010

Whether you are buying diamonds for engagement rings or just for a great piece of everyday jewellery, there are a lot of factors to take into consideration. Many know these at the 4 Cs: Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat. There are other things to consider though, such as whether the diamond was ethically sourced, and just simply how much it suits you.

However, the one that people hear about the most, and therefore the factor that may often seem the most important is the fourth C: Carat.

The truth is that the four Cs are always grouped together simply because they are all pretty much as important as each other. If you change one factor, the value of the diamond will change, so changing colour would have the same effect as changing the carat weight. It is also worth remembering that carat is the measure of the diamonds weight, not its physical size.

The importance carat will have will be more affected by the size of the finger, the style of the ring and also the size of the budget. But whether you are buying custom engagement rings or any other piece of diamond jewellery, be sure not to skimp on the clarity, cut and colour just to make the carat bigger.

Instead try to get the best mix of all four together, and if you can manage that there is a good chance that you will get the very best ring that you can afford, and the perfect one for the finger it is sitting on.
